In
selecting any professional service the same criteria always
applies. Education, training, experience, certifications, and
reputation. In the landscape field there is a joke about what
knowledge is required to provide such services, the simple rule
is “Green Side Up”, however it is more complex. The following is
information that any landscaper should be able to provide.
WHAT IS YOUR LANDSCAPER’S EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND? While some training sessions may provide general information
for the home gardener it does not provide detailed insight into
developing of the landscape. Example… One particular client had us
quote a paver patio job along with some landscaping. She chose
another landscaper to provide those services only to call us 6
months later and tell us she ended up with an $11,000 disaster.
WHAT CONTINUING TRAINING DOES YOUR LANDSCAPER PARTICIPATE IN? This is crucial in keeping up with new ideas available in
the current landscaping market. Is there anything new that may
or may not work in our particular region or area? Continuing
training provides an up-to-date information network that is
generated by experts from Auburn, Georgia, and Mississippi State
Universities.
BASED ON YOUR LANDSCAPE NEEDS WHAT EXPERIENCE DOES YOUR
LANDSCAPER HAVE IN THAT AREA? There are so many new landscaping ideas which are now
available for you, the customer. These include paver walkways
and patios, retaining walls, erosion prevention, night-lighting,
and plant selection. Ask your landscaper to provide a list of
customers he has provided these and other services to and their
location for review and references.
IS
YOUR LANDSCAPER STATE CERTIFIED TO PROVIDE SUCH SERVICES? To insure that the services provided meet the State of
Alabama guidelines; certifications are required to provide ANY
landscaping products. These certifications are to protect the
customer as well as hold the landscape industry to a high
standard. There are certifications for landscape design, setting
of landscape plants, spraying of pesticides, herbicides, and
tree surgery. ALL LANDSCAPERS are required to be ready to
provide a copy of their certifications at anytime for review.
When you meet with any landscaper ask to see his/her state
certifications just for your peace of mind. If they are not
readily available then they are not compliant with state
regulations. The question must be asked as to why they are not
available. Do they even have certifications? REMEMBER THIS IS TO
PROTECT YOU!
WHAT IS THE REPUTATION OF YOUR LANDSCAPER? Ask for list of customers for whom services have been
provided. Be sure the list is diverse in different types of
landscaping projects. Also check up on the landscaper’s work
ethics and job quality. Do they complete projects on time? Do
they instruct the customer on any special needs to care for
their landscape? Do they provide the level of quality and
professionalism that would make their customers return to them
for any other up coming landscaping projects?
WHAT IS THE WARRANTY PROVIDED BY YOUR LANDSCAPER? Does the landscaper provide in writing what their warranty
is for their products and services? Do the plants have a
warranty? Does the landscape irrigation system have a warranty?
If your landscaper has confidence in their abilities and
confidence in their suppliers a warranty should be standard for
services provided? Ask for a copy!
WHAT INSURANCE DOES YOUR LANDSCAPER HAVE TO PROTECT YOU, “THE
CUSTOMER”? State law requires that businesses with a certain number of
employees provide Worker’s Compensation Insurance to protect the
company, employees and customers if a mishap were to occur.
Also, Liability Insurance is available to provide another
umbrella of protection to insure no backlash to the customer.
When you discuss your needs with a landscaper, ask to see
his/her proof of insurance for your peace of mind.
